DIY: Create a Beautiful Holiday Centerpiece

Posted by Mary Babiez on Nov 08 2017

Are you hosting a holiday dinner this year? Wouldn’t you just love to have a holiday centerpiece that gets noticed and adds the perfect festive feeling to your table? Sure, you can go out and buy one, but they don’t come cheap, and if you’re hosting a holiday dinner, you already have a full shopping list, right?

Whether you are super crafty or not so much, we have some holiday centerpiece ideas that are easy to put together yourself. These will save you time and money, both of which you’ll need for everything else on your holiday dinner prep list.

Create a centerpiece with ornaments. You already have them for your tree; use them on your table as well. Select a variety of colored glass ornaments and pile them together in a glass bowl. You can either use one large bowl or 2 or 3 smaller bowls, depending on what you have on hand and the size of your table. Add some sprigs of pine to complete the festive design, and place it at the center of your table. Surround it with candlesticks or votive candles to add to the elegance, and you’re done!

Create a holiday ribbon centerpiece. Run a strip of ribbon at least 2 inches wide (the wider the better; 4 inches is ideal) down the center of your tablecloth. Line up a series of vases along the ribbon in the center of the table. The vases can either be matching or different shapes and sizes. Use whatever you have on hand. Two to four vases work well, based on the size of your table. The larger the table, the more vases you can add. Place holly, poinsettia, or other holiday flowers in each vase. Tie a piece of the same ribbon you have going down the center of your table around the vases. Beautiful!

Create a centerpiece of gifts. Since Christmas and gifts go hand in hand, you can create a festive centerpiece of holiday gifts. Gather together a collection of gift boxes of various colors, design, and sizes. Layer them together on a cake stand or large platter and place in the center of your table. Don’t stack too high as you want your guests to be able to see across the table and you don't want it to topple over either! Finish it off with flowing ribbon or multiple holiday bows.

Create an outdoorsy centerpiece. Do you have a more rustic table? You can create a centerpiece with twigs and branches from outside. Simply gather up some twigs, pine, and holly, and scatter them down the middle of your table. Layer pine cones on top, and add a few colored ornaments along the way.

Add elegance to the outdoorsy look. Similar to above, you can make a wreath or long swag out of pine cones, and spray paint them either gold or silver for an elegant look. Add ribbon, ornaments or other holiday décor for a more festive design.

Create a holiday card centerpiece. This is a great way to display some of your holiday cards or recycle cards from previous years. Scatter a variety of holiday cards along the center of the table as a base for a series of candles or vases. Place the cards at all different angles with some layering each other. This adds interest rather than an even line. Place vases or candle in between sections of cards along the way.

Centerpieces add interest and a festive design to your holiday table. They can be as simple as tossing whatever festive items you have on hand into a bowl and adding a few simple candles or vases to complete the look. No need to buy something expensive to adorn your table this year. You can easily do it yourself with any of these ideas.
