Summer Staple: How to Pack for a Picnic
Posted by Mary Babiez on Jul 14 2015
We’re well into summer and many of us spend weekends at the beach, in the park, at an outdoor concert, or just enjoying our own backyards. Nothing screams summer quite like a day trip with a picnic lunch packed for your favorite destination.
In one of my favorite books, Summer: a User’s Guide, author Suzanne Brown, tells us everything we need to know to plan the perfect picnic.
- Freeze bottles of water or preferred beverage to keep them cool longer on a hot day.
- Bring finger foods and sandwiches which are easy to eat and pack well.
- Include a mix of simple appetizers, such as cheese, fruit and nuts.
- Avoid using mayonnaise in hot weather as it can spoil quickly.
- Green salads can wilt easily, so pack crunchy vegetable crudité and dip instead.
- For dessert, choose easy to handle cookies and brownies rather than cake or pie.
