What's So Special About May - May Fun Facts

Posted by Mary Babiez on May 01 2014

This was our May 1st post on Facebook.  I loved the quote when I found it and I loved the photo as it represents two key facts about May:

May flower of the month: Lily of the Valley

May birthstone: Emerald

Other notable facts about May:

Holidays which occur in May:

May Day

Cinco de Mayo

National Teacher Day

Mother's Day

Victoria Day

Memorial Day

The month of May was named for the Greek goddess Maia.

The emerald symbolizes success and love.

Lily of the Valley is often used in weddings. Famous brides who included Lily of the Valley in their bridal bouquets include Kate Middleton and Princess Grace Kelly.

It was once considered bad luck to get married in May There is a poem that says "Marry in May and you'll rue the day". (I know some wonderful couples married in May so this is definitely an old wive's tale!)

May is the month for the famous Indianapolis 500 car race and the Kentucky Derby, the world's most famous horse race.

I think my favorite thing about May is the simple fact that it is spring, and gardens are awakening. I love watching our gardens begin to bloom, wondering how they will change from last season.
